I am always astonished at the variety of materials that nature has provided. Even if one were to only use native species, a full palette of colors, textures and grains are available. Another world of possibilities arises when recycled or reclaimed materials are used. Many times, these woods had a past life as a bridge, a factory or a gate and the character of the wood has been altered by the wear, nail holes or the weather... adding even more depth and patina to the board.
Over the years, I have developed a network of trusted wood sources - from small single-man sawmill operators in Ohio and Kansas, to a large warehouse facility in Fort Collins. I am always on the prowl for special boards. Many times, I purchase lumber supply simply because I know I won't see another specimen like this in front of me again. Eventually, a specific job or commission comes along and the wood suddenly has a new life.
